Mac Won't Turn On? Follow This Safe Checklist

If your Mac won't turn on, follow this safe checklist to separate no power from a blank screen, use model-specific steps, and know when to seek service.

If your Mac won't turn on, start with three reversible checks: confirm the power connection, hold the power button for about 10 seconds, then disconnect every nonessential accessory and try again. Before doing anything more advanced, look and listen closely. A sound, fan, trackpad click, or backlight suggests the Mac is receiving power. An Apple logo, symbol, or startup-options screen confirms that it has turned on and moved into startup.

Work through this checklist in order and stop as soon as the Mac responds. Do not open the case, erase the Mac, or keep repeating random startup-key combinations.

First, Decide Whether the Mac Is Off or Stuck During Startup

The first useful diagnosis is not the failed component. It is whether the Mac shows any sign of power.

I make this split before trying a reset because it prevents a common mistake: treating a display or startup failure as if the Mac has no power. It also keeps destructive recovery actions out of an early troubleshooting step.

Step 1: Check the Entire Power Path

Confirm that power can reach the Mac before changing software or startup settings.

  1. Plug the adapter directly into a working wall outlet, not a hub, dock, or extension strip you have not tested.
  2. Check that the power cable is secure at the outlet, adapter, and Mac.
  3. Inspect the cable, connector, adapter, and Mac port. Stop using any part that is visibly damaged.
  4. Test the outlet with another device you know works.
  5. If you have another compatible charging cable or power adapter, try it. Do not assume every USB-C cable can charge a Mac.
  6. For a desktop Mac, also check the external display's power, video connection, and power button.

Apple's current no-power guidance begins with the same checks. A charger that works with a phone is not automatically suitable for a MacBook; the cable and adapter still need to be compatible with the Mac.

If the MacBook has been stored with an empty battery, leave it connected to a known-good compatible adapter for a while before repeating the next step. Apple's current charging guide says a Mac recently removed from long-term storage may need about 20 minutes of charging before it can be used.

Tip: Change one part of the power path at a time. If you replace the outlet, cable, and adapter together, you may get the Mac running without learning which part caused the failure.

Step 2: Perform Apple's 10-Second Power-Button Check

The long press turns off a Mac that is already on but unresponsive; the following normal press attempts a clean startup. It does not erase the Mac.

  1. Press and hold the Mac's power button for about 10 seconds. On a MacBook with Touch ID, press and hold the Touch ID button itself.
  2. Release the button.
  3. Wait a moment.
  4. Press and release the power button normally.

This is not a factory reset. If the Mac was already on but unresponsive, forcing it off can lose unsaved changes, which is why I use this only after checking for signs of life.

Do not turn the 10-second instruction into a minute-long hold or repeat it continuously. If one careful attempt changes nothing, continue through the checklist.

Step 3: Disconnect Every Nonessential Accessory

A faulty accessory, cable, hub, or drive can interfere with startup. Unplug printers, external drives, USB hubs, docks, mobile devices, audio interfaces, and other accessories. Leave only mains power and any keyboard, mouse, or display required to use the Mac.

Repeat the 10-second power-button check once with those devices removed. If the Mac starts, shut it down normally later and reconnect one accessory at a time. The accessory that makes the symptom return is a lead, not proof that the device itself is defective; its cable, port, power supply, or driver may also be involved.

Tip: Do not unplug a storage device while it is actively transferring data. If the Mac is actually running and you can see its screen, eject the drive normally before disconnecting it.

Step 4: Use the Right Model-Specific Power Step

Apple silicon and Intel Macs do not share one universal reset sequence.

Apple silicon Mac

There is no separate manual SMC reset for Apple silicon. Apple's no-power page says you do not need the Intel SMC procedure. The power-button check in Step 2 is the relevant first action.

If holding the power button eventually shows startup options, the Mac has turned on. Release the button and move to the startup path below instead of continuing to troubleshoot it as a dead Mac.

Intel-based Mac

Apple lists an SMC reset as a possible next step for an older Intel Mac that still does not turn on. The exact sequence depends on whether the Mac has the Apple T2 Security Chip, whether it is a notebook or desktop, and in some cases whether its battery is removable.

Use Apple's model-specific page. Do not copy a generic Shift-Control-Option combination from memory, and do not apply it to Apple silicon.

Step 5: If Anything Appears on Screen, Follow the Startup Symptom

A visible screen means the Mac is turning on. Match the next action to what appears rather than continuing the no-power loop.

The startup-options image near the top of this guide shows what a successful Apple-silicon response looks like. If you reach that screen, the power-on stage has succeeded.

Follow Apple's blank-screen instructions. Apple directs you to try macOS Recovery, repair the startup disk with Disk Utility if Recovery opens, and then restart. Reinstalling macOS is a later step if the blank screen continues; do not erase the disk simply because the display is blank.

Use Apple's startup-screen index to match the exact symbol. A flashing question mark, for example, points to a startup-disk or macOS problem rather than a no-power failure.

Start macOS Recovery

  • Apple silicon: With the Mac shut down, press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select Options, then click Continue.
  • Intel: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold Command-R to use the built-in Recovery system. Apple's startup-key guide lists Internet Recovery alternatives when the built-in system is unavailable.

Recovery gives you tools such as Disk Utility and reinstall macOS. It does not mean you should erase the startup disk. Back up data first whenever the Mac becomes usable and an erase is being considered.

Test Safe Mode

Safe Mode is useful only when the Mac can turn on far enough to load startup controls. Apple says it can help identify software that loads during startup.

  • Apple silicon: Hold the power button until startup options appear, select a volume, hold Shift, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  • Intel: Turn on or restart the Mac and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.

If the Mac starts only in Safe Mode, restart normally once. If the failure returns, review login items and background software one change at a time. The startup-program guide explains the current controls.

Step 6: Run Apple Diagnostics When the Mac Responds

Apple Diagnostics can test internal hardware, but the Mac must respond enough to enter the diagnostic startup flow. Prepare the Mac on a hard, stable, ventilated surface and disconnect nonessential devices while leaving required power, display, keyboard, mouse, and network connections.

  • Apple silicon: Hold the power button until Options appears, release it, then hold Command-D until the Mac restarts.
  • Intel: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold D. If that does not work, try Option-D.

Record any reference code. Apple's current Diagnostics startup guide gives the processor-specific steps. Its separate diagnostic-scope guide explains that the tool checks internal hardware, not external devices or software conflicts. A clean result does not prove that a hub, cable, login item, or macOS installation is healthy.

If the Mac shows no response at all, you cannot use Diagnostics from that Mac. Continue to service rather than treating the missing test as a result.

Step 7: Treat Firmware Revive as a Rare Escalation

A firmware revive is not the next routine step after a failed power-button check. Apple reserves it for certain Apple-silicon and T2-equipped Macs with symptoms such as an unresolved blank screen, a firmware-recovery indicator, an exclamation mark in a circle, or a persistent macOS installation problem.

The current Apple firmware guide requires another Mac running macOS 14 or later, internet access, enough free storage, and a suitable USB-C data-and-charge cable. The exact DFU port and key sequence vary by model.

Apple says to try Revive Mac first because a revive does not erase the affected Mac. Restore Mac erases it. If you are unsure about the model, cable, DFU port, or data consequences, stop and let Apple or an authorized service provider handle this stage.

Tip: “Revive” and “Restore” are not interchangeable. Confirm which button is selected before continuing, especially when the Mac contains data that is not backed up.

When to Stop and Arrange Service

Arrange service when the Mac still shows no response after a verified power connection, one careful power-button attempt, accessories removed, and the correct model-specific step. Also stop when you find liquid exposure, swelling, burning smell, unusual heat, a damaged charging port, or an Apple Diagnostics reference code you cannot resolve.

Do not open a modern MacBook to reseat parts or disconnect its battery as a generic troubleshooting step. A no-power symptom does not prove that the battery, logic board, charging circuit, display, or storage has failed.

The same caution applies to data. A Mac that will not turn on does not automatically mean its files are gone, but it also does not guarantee that they can be recovered. Tell the service provider that data preservation matters before authorizing an erase, restore, or hardware replacement.

After the Mac Starts, Back Up Before You Investigate

A successful boot is the moment to protect the data, not proof that the incident was harmless. Make or verify a current backup first. Then install compatible macOS updates, note what changed before the failure, and check battery condition, available storage, and repeatable hardware symptoms.

The native views may be all you need. Battery settings and System Information show Apple's battery condition, maximum capacity, and cycle count. Apple Diagnostics remains the appropriate built-in hardware test.
